The new calculation standard for personal injury

For Letselinzicht we developed an online platform together with Helder bij Letselschade that brings together schedules of loss, future loss and statutory interest. Legal expertise was translated into reliable calculation logic, a clear workflow and software that saves time again on every file.

A schedule of loss is one of the most important documents in a personal injury file. Even so, it is often still put together in Excel or Word. Every firm has its own model, amounts are indexed by hand, and future loss and statutory interest need separate calculations. A small change can therefore create a great deal of new calculation and checking work.

Letselinzicht brings that process together in one online application. Lawyers add heads of damage, after which the relevant guidelines, indexation, statutory interest and present value are applied automatically. The result is a reproducible schedule of loss that can be updated throughout the file and exported as a substantiated document.

The platform grew out of a collaboration between Eenvoud and Helder bij Letselschade. Their lawyers bring in the daily practice and the professional rules; we translate those into product choices, interaction, technology and reliable software. In doing so we are not only the developer, but co-initiator and product partner.

Not software for lawyers, but software with lawyers

The challenge

Personal injury calculations consist of many interdependent parts. A head of damage can be one-off or recurring, run across several calendar years and fall under a different guideline or indexation each year. Advance payments have to be processed correctly, statutory interest changes over time, and future loss calls for calculations of present value and the tax component.

At the same time the outcome has to stay understandable. The lawyer must be able to check every calculation and justify it to a client, an insurer or the opposing party. Automation may therefore not replace the professional judgement, but has to make clear how an amount comes about.

Alongside that computational complexity, a file contains sensitive personal data and financial information. Roles, permissions, security, traceability of changes and secure European hosting therefore had to be part of the product from the ground up.

Our approach

We started from the way personal injury lawyers work: which information becomes available when, which items change over the course of a file and which calculations are now made again and again. From that practice we built the product up step by step.

  • A file-based application in which heads of damage, advance payments, approvals and supporting evidence come together in one place
  • A central calculation layer for guidelines, annual indexation, statutory interest, future loss and present value
  • Live recalculation on every change, so that it is immediately visible what an adjustment means for the total
  • Roles, permissions, two-factor authentication and audit logs for control over users and actions on files
  • PDF exports including the underlying calculations, so that not only the final amount but also how it came about can be shared
  • Recognition of receipts and invoices, in which data is suggested automatically and the lawyer keeps the final check

We develop Letselinzicht continuously. Feedback from users is translated straight into the roadmap. New functionality therefore does not come from a list of features thought up in advance, but from the actions in real files that cost lawyers time or are needlessly prone to error.

We also take care of the technical infrastructure, monitoring, security measures and releases. That keeps the application, the calculation rules and the public website one coherent product.

Calculations that used to be specialist work in separate documents are now transparent, uniform and reproducible per file - as a product on the market.

The result

Letselinzicht replaces a collection of separate documents, calculation tools and manual checks with one fixed way of working. Guidelines and indexation sit centrally in the system, amounts move along automatically and every calculation can still be reconstructed afterwards.

Users report a time saving of up to 50 percent on the calculation work. But the gain is not only in speed. Schedules of loss get a consistent structure, checks become easier and changes are visible straight away. As a result the conversation between the claimant’s representative and the insurer has to be about spreadsheets and formulas less often - and can get back to the substance of the file sooner.

The application is now used by self-employed personal injury lawyers, attorneys, firms and insurers. For smaller organisations it offers a complete calculation model straight away; larger organisations can work with their own roles, settings, branding and integrations.

The lawyer keeps the judgement. Letselinzicht takes over the calculation work.

What began as a shared frustration about schedules of loss made by hand grew into a software product in its own right with a national ambition: one transparent calculation standard that every party in the personal injury sector can rely on.

One schedule of loss, one traceable calculation and less time lost to manual work.
