Financial charts and forecast figures above a desk in an office

Case

From Excel sheets to one platform you can trust

For fintech start-up Metics we built a web application for balance sheet, profit and scenario planning - the clear alternative to scattered spreadsheets.

Metics brings financial planning together in one model. A company is built up out of nodes: building blocks such as price, revenue, cash flow and costs, with relations between them. You plan by year and by month, compare scenarios and see straight away what a change does. In the chart you can grab a line and drag it; the model recalculates while you drag.

The difference with a spreadsheet is the direction of calculation. Assumptions are not the only thing driving the outcome; you can also pick a target value, such as EBITDA or solvency: the ratio between equity and debt. The calculation engine then looks for the underlying assumptions that fit it, respecting fixed values and relations between items. If it does not come out exactly, it keeps searching step by step without overshooting the target. We built the platform and developed it together with Metics into a mature, independent product.

The challenge

In many companies financial planning happens in a jungle of Excel sheets: manual input, formulas that differ just slightly per row, assumptions nobody can trace back. Research shows that nearly 90% of spreadsheets contain errors - and one wrong formula or a shifted decimal can disturb an entire forecast. The lack of version control makes it worse: who changed what, when, and why? And when the company grows, the spreadsheets do not grow with it: they get slow, crash on large datasets and merging sources becomes an error-prone chore. Can we build a platform that reduces errors, saves time and gives clear insight into financial models? That was the question Metics brought to us.

Our approach

Together with the Metics team we built a web application for balance sheet and profit-and-loss forecasting and scenario planning. We modelled the core logic in close collaboration with financial experts - solid enough for CFOs, clear enough for founders and managers. The main components:

  • An interface that feels familiar if you are used to Excel, but is far less error-prone
  • Dynamic balance sheet and P&L models that recalculate in real time on every change
  • Planning several years ahead, with scenarios you put side by side
  • Smart logic that understands how metrics relate - writing formulas is no longer needed
  • Easy collaboration and sharing plans with teams and advisers
  • Everything securely in the cloud, with full version control and a trail of every change

For five years we kept developing the platform, from the first version in 2020 to a mature product. Along the way the calculation engine grew with increasingly complex models: consolidation of multiple entities, indexations and what-if scenarios that had simply become unmaintainable in spreadsheets.

The result

All plans sit in one place instead of in separate workbooks. Historical figures go in and plans can go back out to Excel. Scenarios sit side by side, with ratios you can pull at. Teams and advisers share the same model, with comments on items and a log in which every change can be found.

Valuation and financing sit in the same platform. Metics calculates company value on the basis of future cash flows and handles loans by year and by month: equal repayments, a fixed total amount, repayment at the end, or interest added until the end.

Along the way we rebuilt the front end of the application while people kept working in it. The calculation engine and the connection to it stayed in place and grew along.

In 2025 we completed the platform and handed it over. Metics runs on its own and is live at metics.io.

Scenarios sit side by side, with ratios you can pull at.

Balance sheet, forecasts and scenarios now sit in one place - traceable, shareable and without manual formulas.
